One of my favorite things to do with my boys is snuggle together in bed and read a good book. Whether it’s a favorite board book with mostly pictures or a longer chapter book, reading together is something we love to do, especially my oldest, Miles, who is 5 years old.
Sam in the Trees is a new book by Alexandra L. Cohen, an Austin, Texas-based author. It tells the story of a young boy who loves climbing trees but has a growing fear of coming down from the trees he climbs. The readers follow Sam on a magical adventure through confronting his fears and learning that he has always been capable of climbing down as well as up.
This is a longer children’s book — not a chapter book, but still on the long side. Miles was completely captivated by the story, though, and hung on to every word until the very end. He loved the whimsical illustrations and listened to the story so well!
Miles is a kid with a lot of fears and worries, so this was a great message book for him, not just a cute little story. He gets so nervous about things (like fire drills at school, for instance) that I knew Sam in the Trees would be an important book for us to read together. It has a great message about courage and self-confidence, one he needs to hear again and again.
You can buy the book Sam in the Trees online at saminthetrees.com for $16.00. It’s a great read and definitely one you can pull out at times when your kids are experiencing some kind of fear, to remind them that we can overcome our fears!
